Kinkaid School Day of Service

February 21, 2009

On Saturday, February 21st, over 20 Kinkaid Middle School students, parents and staff participated in the Kinkaid Middle School Day of Service by volunteering at Small Steps Nurturing Center’s Jensen Drive campus.  The volunteers prepared the community garden for the upcoming spring planting and refreshed the playground with additional mulch.

kcs1aWith the planting beds prepared, Small Steps students will now be able to begin their planting.  The garden offers a fun outdoor laboratory for the them.  Whether they are discovering worms and integrating them into the classroom curriculum, learning basic ideas about science and life, or experiencing the joys of deferred gratification, our students are learning through fun, creative activity.

The garden offers our teachers curricular possibilities in math, science, motor skills and social-emotional development.  And there are lots of great books to connect to gardening to reinforce early literacy skills.

Through the dedicated work of wonderful volunteers like the Kinkaid students today, Small Steps can achieve so much more in the education of its children.  We want to thank all the students and adults volunteering today, and thank the organizers at Kinkaid who put in all the time required to make an event like this a success.  Photos of this fun day may be viewed in the Kinkaid Middle School Day of Service photo album.
