Small Steps’ Plans for 2011 Featured on Houston Chronicle Website
We are once again thankful to The Houston Chronicle, which featured Small Steps through their online neighborhood magazine, Ultimate Heights.
The article, entitled “Small Steps Nurturing Center announces new programs, expansions for 2011” features information on Small Steps’ long-term strategic plan that the Board of Directors have developed, as well as the addition of our first staff Speech Pathologist, Eulalia (“Lali”) R. Gray, M.A., CCC-SLP.
Speech Therapy
There is a great need for speech services for children in poverty. Studies indicate the language deficit for children in poverty before the age of three is substantial. Additionally, Small Steps observes a clear need of children in poverty who are significantly delayed in their expressive and receptive language abilities.
We are excited about the great strides in language development that we have seen in our students this fall through the addition of Ms. Gray to Small Steps, and look forward to a continued expansion of Small Steps’ speech therapy program.
Expansion
We serve 118 children in our full-day, school-year program and the demand continues to grow each year. We receive approximately 3 applications for each space available. The Board of Directors has developed a long-term strategic plan to help address the needs of the community and to fulfill our mission. This plan will include the addition of four more classrooms at our Jensen Drive (Fifth Ward) location, which would allow us to eventually serve 180 children in total. We also plan to add observation and training capabilities, as we receive many requests from collaborative partners and education students to observe and learn from Small Steps.
