R.E.A.D. For Houston Donates English and Bilingual Books to Small Steps

January 27, 2011

Small Steps recently received a donation of books from R.E.A.D. for Houston, a volunteer organization that provides books to children in need.  R.E.A.D. for Houston (Recycle Engage And Donate your used books) collects books from donors and distributes them to various centers that have programs to promote literacy. Their focus is to improve literacy by enhancing the access of books to children and adults.

R.E.A.D for Houston recently donated English and Bilingual (English and Spanish) books to Small Steps.  These books will be distributed to Small Steps families during our winter Home Visits, which are visits by the teachers and social-emotional staff to our students’ homes, in order to meet with each family in their home setting.

During their home visit, each child will receive a book, which encourages literacy activities outside of the classroom.  Through our Parent Education program, and through meetings with teachers, Small Steps parents are encouraged as their child’s primary teacher.  With this donation of books, we can help provide literature in the home and encourage parents to read to their children every day!

Thank you to R.E.A.D. for Houston and its founder, Sam Collins, for their generous donation of books to Small Steps! Thank you for encouraging literacy in Houston, especially among economically at-risk children and their families.
