History

Founded in 1995, Small Steps began as a grassroots effort serving just six children in a community park after a summer intern saw the need to serve the young children who were unable to attend Impact Church of Christ’s Vacation Bible School.

By 1999, Small Steps had raised enough funds to build a 6,000 square foot facility and expand the program to serve almost 60 inner city children.  A 9,000 square foot facility was opened in September 2006 in the Fifth Ward and increased enrollment to 117 students being served during the 2008-2009 school year.

Land adjacent to the Fifth Ward campus has been designated for future growth.  As of June, 2009, Small Steps has graduated 167 children to kindergarten or first grade, and formed partnerships with area magnet programs and exemplary elementary schools to ensure our students continue to receive high-quality educational opportunities.
