SSNC at a Glance

Small Steps Nurturing Center is a faith-based, accredited (NAEYC) early childhood program serving economically at-risk children two years old through Kindergarten.

The program offers a ten month a year, full day, high quality educational program at two campuses in the First Ward and Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas.

Qualifying students live in the zip codes surrounding the two schools (77003, 77007, 77008, 77009, 77019, 77020 or 77026) and have family incomes qualifying for the free portion of the National School Lunch Program.

There is no financial cost to families; instead, families contribute back to Small Steps through volunteer hours.  Volunteer opportunities include assisting with school, attending parent classes at Small Steps, and participating in parent-child events.

Small Steps is funded through the generosity of corporate, individual, foundation and church donations, and through of its two annual sporting events, the Small Steps Energy Classic and the Small Steps Clays Classic, and a new wine pairing dinner, the Small Steps Ultimate Wine Classic.

The variety and depth of programs offered at Small Steps is made possible by an invaluable corps of volunteers.  During the 2008-2009, 725 volunteers gave over 2,541 hours of service.

Small Steps’ two campuses are located at 1709 DePelchin (First Ward) and 2902 Jensen (Fifth Ward).
