Volunteer Your Time

Small Steps has many ways you can become involved to make an impact on the lives of the children we serve. Contact Retta Bravo at 713-236-0330 for more information about volunteering.

Volunteer Opportunities with Children

Buddy Program
Volunteers work one-on-one with a child for approximately twenty to thirty minutes. Activities include working puzzles, counting activities, reading books, writing names and using manipulatives to improve a specific skill.  The goal of the buddy program is to pair each Small Steps child with an adult in order to have consistent time each week  where they feel cared for.

Reading
Volunteers read books during storytime in the classroom or with children in the morning at breakfast.

Classroom
Volunteers assist in the classrooms with craft activities, centers, science projects or other activities developed by the teacher.

Computers
Volunteers work with one child in the computer lab on age appropriate software to reinforce educational concepts previously introduced in the classroom.

Playground
Volunteers play with children during playground time in the morning or afternoon.

Small Steps Into the Arts Program
Volunteers serve as assistants in the afternoons during the fine arts program.

Special Event & Special Project Volunteer Opportunities

Field Trips
Volunteers are utilized as “buddies” for children on the field trip to achieve safety and ensure learning.

Library
Volunteers enter data into a computerized catalogue system to maintain an up-to-date list of books contained in the school library. Volunteers also assist in pulling books needed for upcoming lessons.

Special Events
Golf Tournament, Clay Shoot, Wine Classic Event, or Luncheon
Volunteers serve in several capacities on event day including: registration, shuttle coordination, provisions and prize displays.

Small Steps Auxiliary
If you are looking for an untypical opportunity to get involved, our auxiliary offers an opportunity to be involved and make a difference in the lives of economically at risk children in the inner city of Houston. Whether your interest is in working directly with events or behind the scenes, there is a place for you. Your time, talents, skills and gifts are welcome.

Easter Egg Hunt
An Easter Egg Hunt is held each year for the children attending Small Steps. Volunteers serve refreshments and stuff/hide eggs.

Christmas
Volunteers help facilitate the allocation and distribution of gifts as well as provide assistance at a holiday party.

Graduation
Volunteers work with graduating preschoolers and staff in various capacities to create a memorable day.

Project Days
Various weekend or weeknight projects, such as landscaping and gardening, are valuable contributions to the Program.
